Sharpening on water stones

The two-stone method for a plane blade or chisel: flatten the back, set the bevel on a coarse stone, polish on a fine one, and keep the stones flat.

Every edge in this file was set on a stone in water. The method is old because it is the right one: a coarse stone to shape, a fine stone to polish, and a flat surface under both. Two stones and a flat plate are all the sharpening kit a worker needs, and the skill is smaller than the tools.

The two stones

A stone of about a thousand grit does the real cutting: it re-forms the bevel, removes the dull edge and grinds the facets true. A stone of about six thousand does the polishing: it takes the scratches off the first stone's work and leaves a mirror that shaves hair. Everything between them is a matter of patience, and anything beyond them is a matter of taste.

Flatten the back first

The back of the blade is the face that does the cutting; it is polished once, for life, on the fine stone until it reflects. A blade with a hollow back or a rounded edge cannot take a keen edge no matter how long the bevel is worked. Flatten the back, then the bevel, then keep them that way, the rule is simple and total.

The bevel and the water

The bevel is held at its existing angle, about thirty degrees for a chisel or plane iron, and worked on the coarse stone in small circles until a wire edge raises along the full width. The stone is kept wet, never dry, and the slurry that forms is the cutting agent. Then the fine stone polishes the wire edge off. A leather strop finishes the last burr.

Keeping the stones flat

A water stone is soft and hollows under the blade; a dished stone grinds a curved bevel that will not track. The stone is flattened on a lapping plate or a sheet of coarse paper on glass as often as it is used, and stored where it cannot freeze. The edge that fails is usually a stone that was not flat, not a hand that was not skilled.

The edge as a habit

A worker who sharpens at the first sign of drag never faces the full job; the fine stone alone restores an edge that is only dulled, and the coarse stone is reserved for the rare chip or the blade that was neglected. Five minutes at the six-thousand stone at the end of a session is cheaper than an hour at the thousand-grit after a month of pushing a blunt iron. The kit is two stones; the habit is keeping them flat and using the fine one first.

The stone and the hand

A beginner's fear is the angle; the truth is the stone forgives a degree or two if the hand is consistent, and ruins nothing. The edge is set by repetition, not precision, and the wire edge is the honest signal that the work is done. Ten minutes on the coarse stone, five on the fine, a strop at the end, and the blade is sharper than most workshop blades ever are. That is all the mystery there is: the stone is flat, the water is wet, and the hand learns the angle by doing it.

Sharpening is a flat stone, a wet surface, a flat back and a steady angle, repeated until the wire edge forms and is polished away. The steel does the cutting; the stone only gives it permission. Two stones, kept flat, are a lifetime's kit.
