Wedges that tighten the joint

The wedged mortise and tenon and its cousins: how a small wedge of harder wood locks a joint for decades, and how to read one that is working.

The smallest piece in a frame often does the largest job. The wedge, a sliver of harder wood driven into a saw kerf in the tenon, is what turns a snug joint into a locked one, and it does so with a force that does not relax when the glue-line of a modern assembly long since has.

How a wedge locks

A through tenon protrudes beyond the mortise face. A saw kerf cut partway into that protruding end accepts the wedge; driving the wedge spreads the tenon end, pressing it tight against the mortise cheeks like a dovetail seen in miniature. The joint can no longer withdraw, and the spread tenon end reads as the small dark rectangle that signals a wedged joint to anyone who looks closely at old work.

Choosing the wedge wood

The wedge is traditionally harder than the member it locks: oak or walnut in a pine frame, a darker hardwood in a softwood tenon. Hard wood wedges spread more and mark the tenon end beautifully; matching wood wedges are gentler and less visible. The wedge must be driven straight and to a consistent depth, a wedge driven at an angle splits the tenon edge it was meant to save.

The mechanical advantage that lasts

A wedge converts hammer blows into clamping pressure that does not decay. Unlike a nail, which loosens as the wood shrinks around it, the wedge inside a through tenon is held by the same shrinkage that loosens everything else: as the joint dries the wedge stays tight because it is jammed against the mortise cheeks, not relying on friction alone. Old tool handles, hammer eyes and frame corners still hold on this principle after generations.

Reading a wedge in place

A healthy wedge sits flush or just proud, fills its kerf, and shows no split running from the kerf to the tenon edge. A wedge that has crept out leaves a gap that can sometimes be re-seated with a tap and a little glue on the wedge itself, never a swollen wedge hammered into a dry tenon, which is how old frames get split at the one place meant to hold them.

The wedge and the handle

The clearest place to see the principle is a tool handle: the head of a hammer or the eye of an adze is held by a wedge driven into the sawn end of the haft, and a century of use has not loosened it because every shock drives the wedge a fraction tighter. The same piece of logic holds the legs of a stool, the rails of a fence, the pins of a gate. Wherever wood must be kept from pulling apart, a wedge of harder wood answers.

The same answer serves a chair rung, a mallet head, a trestle leg and the pin of a gate hinge: wherever a wooden part must not pull free of its socket, a small wedge of something harder closes the question, and keeps closing it a little more every time the joint is worked.

The wedge is the smallest locking device in the file: a tapered sliver that turns a through tenon into a permanent, inspectable joint. It lasts because it works with the wood's own shrinkage instead of against it, the whole philosophy of the craft in one small piece.
