Wood that moves by design
Why joints are designed to move: seasonal swelling and shrinkage across the grain, floating panels, and the checks that are not failures.

Every board in a building is still breathing. Wood takes up moisture when the air is damp and releases it when the air is dry, and because the cells run lengthwise, the board swells and shrinks across its width while barely changing along its length. A joint that ignores this cracks its own frame; a joint designed for it moves a little every year and stays sound.
The numbers that govern everything
Across the grain, a board can move several percent between a wet season and a heated winter, the USDA Wood Handbook gives the tangential shrinkage of common species at four to nine percent from green to oven-dry, and the in-service seasonal swing is a smaller but still real fraction of that. Along the grain, movement is nearly zero. The joint designer's job is to let the width move while the length stays put.
The floating panel
The classic answer is the floating panel: a wide board captured in a grooved frame, free to swell and shrink inside the groove without pushing the frame apart or splitting itself. Doors, lids and panels everywhere follow this rule. The groove must be deep enough for the widest seasonal excursion, and the panel must never be glued or pinned across its width.
The check that is not a failure
A lengthwise crack near the end of a beam is usually a drying check, the surface shrank around a wetter core when the timber was young. It looks alarming and is mostly cosmetic: it does not run through the member's length, it does not open under load the way a shear split does, and old carpenters read it as the mark of honest timber rather than damage. The checks to worry about are new, growing, or running with the grain into a joint.
What this means for repairs
Filling seasonal gaps with rigid filler sets up the next crack: when the wood swells again it crushes the filler and splits somewhere else. Flexible fillers, sliding joints and ventilation beat cosmetic fixes. The file's rule: first ask whether the gap is the wood doing its job, then decide whether anything needs doing.
Reading the seasons in a room
The same movement explains why a door that stuck all summer swings free in winter, why a tabletop shows a faint ridge at the breadboard ends after a dry spell, and why a floor that was tight in September gaps at the seams by February. None of these are defects; they are the wood's calendar. The owner who reads them stops oiling, filling and planing at the wrong season, and starts doing the one thing that works, which is waiting.
The card's practical advice is one sentence: buy the wood, learn its band, and let the house and the timber agree on the seasons before judging any seam.

Wood moves across the grain and almost not at all along it; the good joint accepts this, the bad joint fights it and loses. A gap that opens and closes with the seasons is often the design working. Learn to tell that gap from a failure, and half of all "defects" become the timber doing exactly what it should.
